Fresco-secco painting is done on dry plaster (secco is dry in Italian). The pigments require a binding medium, such as egg (tempera), glue or oil to attach the pigment to the wall. Today’s muralists use a mixture of mediums such as acrylic paints painted over pre-painted plaster walls or ceilings or oil paints with a medium/glaze or sometimes a mixture of the two.
