HISTORY AN INSPIRATION FOR THE MODERN DAY MURALIST As a modern day muralist one looks to history for inspiration and certainly it was those early murals from Pompeii with their worn warm colours which inspired me to become a mural artist in the beginning. Murals date to Upper Paleolithic times (paintings in the Chauvet Cave in southern France 30,000 BC). Many ancient murals have survived in Egyptian tombs (3150 BC) the Minoan palaces (Neopalatial period, 1700-1600 BC) and in Pompeii (around 100 BC - AD 79). In more modern times, murals had a revival with Mexican "muralista" art movement (Diego Rivera etc.).
